Kubrick's The Shining & 2001 ASO

What The Combined Endings Reveal.

There seems to be a direct relationship between the endings of these 2 films and an inherent relationship that I believe can't be put down to mere chance, the poetry, the precision and the execution just seems too mind blowing.

Ok within the film The Shining...let's just say that the importance of 'doors & doorways' is signified throughout!

They're important in...

2001:ASO too...."open the pod bay doors please HAL".

FMJ..."I see a red door and I want it painted black."

ACO...Alex trying to get through the Cat Women's door.

Dr Strangelove...the faulty bomb bay doors.

To begin with I'm going to show with pictures (the synched videos will come later).  We're basically taking just over the last minute & a half (1:32 or 92 secs) of the ending from each of these films and using the 'passing thru the monolith' & 'passing through the Overlook lobby doorway' as a fixed anchor point from each, basically so each of those moments coincides when either meshed/overlaid or side by side.

From doing this we should see the following outlined...a death/rebirth cycle cross-over (with reference to reincarnation and/or a trapped soul on earth) and that will be both visually and audibly! We will also see perhaps why Jack is posed as 'baphomet' in the Overlook Ball painting and what the 'star child' is really doing at the climax of 2001:ASO.  We should also be able to understand why 'The Gold Room' sign is positioned in the closing sweep shot at the end of The Shining and how that relates to the closing moons shots at the end of 2001.

Hopefully....when all is said and done we should be able to majorly unravel some of the enigmatic end of Kubrick's The Shining and explain a good deal of the meaning of what that photograph is really saying. It seems as though it's a necessary requirement, that this ending can only really be explained, when taken with the 2001:ASO closing scene.


Just want to say here that I didn't actually discover this particular synch, but I came across it.  The original discoverer was 'sizeoflight' from David Icke's message board...and so its thanks to him that I have made this post...if you're out there 'sizeoflight' this is dedicated to you.  Obviously most of the work is my own and it is my own interpretation and one that includes many other various elements.

The rebirth/renaissance hotel room & the Overlook hotel lobby. Our starting point.

Might be better understood through this following image...

Basically it seems that each set mirrors the other....they seem to fit together and the various items seem to occupy the same places etc...candlesticks, chairs, pillars etc.  2001 is the light, The Shining (ironically) is the dark and that would also be true in a personal sense too...Bowman reaching enlightenment, Jack death & an earth (duat) bound rebirth.  Both the sets also seem to be symbolically conveying that they (in one form) represent the same concept, that being 'As above, so below'....which I'll mention again soon.

Remember...right before we sweep through the Overlook lobby (starting point) and experience Jack's rebirth...we see Jack dead and frozen.

Note the 'monolith' like doorway and the candlesticks from each scene too. Also note the 'Gold Room' sign just before we pass thru and the statues either side of the monolith.

Both of these doorways and backgrounds will represent the concept of 'as above, so below' as you will see...later.  The 'space hotel' monolith and background represents 'as above, so below' and the 'overlook hotel, doorway and background/photograph represent 'as above, so below' they're symbolically trying to convey the same concept.

We're about to pass through the monolith & doorway at the exact same moment.

Again note the candlesticks in each and note the statues and their 'pose' too.

The moment after we go thru the monolith and the other side of the doorway...we get presented with the moon & the photographs in full frame.

So just prior to going thru we get 'the gold room' (see Rob's gold room as a representation of the sun, a clockwork orange literally *see pic). Whereas, as soon as we've gone thru we get presented with the moon (2001) immediately right on the otherside of the doorway!

Now for the actual synchs & overlay...I've included 2 versions, a side by side comparison and an overlay of both endings.  Sorry it is not exact, the clips I could obtain have differing aspect ratios etc....so this will have to do for now, but it works fine imo.

You will probably have to view the synch a good few times to take in all the symbolism and synchronicity, so bear that in mind.

Now remember both these closing scenes are trying to convey the concept of 'As above, so below' (the maxim from the emerald tablet of thoth/hermes)...this pic here below shows us the 'statues' from either side of the monolith from 2001 and Jacks 'pose' in the closing photograph.

All 3 depict 'as above, so below'

If the 'monolith' IS a rendition of the 'emerald tablet' (where the 'as above, so below' maxim originates) then that is also saying the same thing...the theme throughout would be the same!

The 'Monolith' = 'As above, So below'?

 The Monolith = The Emerald Tablet of  Hermes/Mercury/Thoth etc?

As Above, So Below

This phrase comes from the beginning of The Emerald Tablet (think...monolith/Oz, see pic) and embraces the entire system of traditional and modern magic which was inscribed upon the tablet in cryptic wording by Hermes Trismegistus. The significance of this phrase is that it is believed to hold the key to all mysteries. All systems of magic are claimed to function by this formula. "'That which is above is the same as that which is below'...Macrocosmos is the same as microcosmos. The universe is the same as God, God is the same as man, man is the same as the cell, the cell is the same as the atom, the atom is the same as...and so on, ad infinitum."    Apply that to the endings of each of these films, 2001 'macrocosm' (above in space, looking down on the world) ans The Shining 'microcosm' (below, on the earth).

What about the all important photograph?  Jack posed as baphomet (the androgynous god & also a dead ringer for Pan) let's take a look.  (note...Another aspect I've considered re: baphomet is his/her connection to sodomy and that obviously has ties to Jack & Danny's relationship & abuse scenario.

The 15th card of the Tarot 'major arcana'...Jack as Baphomet...Sun & Moon symbology (see pic above)...Solve et Coagula, Separate and Join Together (or "dissolve and coagulate")

The position of hands...As above, so below.

"That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above, corresponds to that which is Below". An Hermetic doctrine...Macrocosm & microcosm, which we explained earlier. Baphomet the beast...Black Jack, 21 photos (a jack & an ace, 21 in black jack/pontoon, date 1921.)  21 cards of the tarot major arcana...with The Fool as 22 and 0, the alpha & omega, the beginning and the end.  21 could also refer to 2001, the other aspect of the combined synch...2001 without the value of the zero's = 21.

And again it is referenced in Paths Of Glory...in this shot, the soldier killed by the drunk Colonel.

Can you recall any private 'Jokers' that also resonate with a card game...lol?

Ok let's keep this phrase in mind 'as above, so below' and look at the next picture(s) in the synch...as we close in on the photograph of Jack & the Ball and the 'starchild' hoves in from the left of the picture to 'overlook' planet Earth, ball like in appearance. (although technically it's an oblate spheroid...lol)  As above, so below...separate & join together.  In fact that's exactly what we're actually doing here...taking 2 separate endings and joining them together!

Space hotel 'star child' overlooks the ball (Overlook Ball) shaped planet earth & we can see he's looking at Jack at the Overlook Ball.

So we're getting the reborn 'star child' from the space hotel (room) 'overlooking' the ball shaped planet (macrocosm)...where in synch, he seems to be looking at the photograph of the Overlook Hotel, Ball (microcosm)!  The photo has Jack in it (who we have just seen frozen to death) and therefore would seems suggestive of reincarnation.  Death of Jack to the birth of the 'star child' and/or the rebirth of Jack...a cycle forever & ever...like a trapped soul.

"You've always been the caretaker. I should know sir, i've always been here."

Supporting evidence...this picture from the end of the film, shows that a 'light source' is emanting from the left side of the frame...see the sahdows that are cast on the wall.  I think this is meant to indicate that the 'source of kight' is the 'starchild' looking down from space in his luminous shell.

Danny's 'cycle' and the 'forever and ever and ever' moment.

This is one aspect of the 'cycle'...the other being the 'cycle of abuse' for Danny.

Just to press home how crucial this 'as above, so below' aspect is, I've provided the same synch in overlay too and this idea is even more apparent in this next pic.

Jack's hand (left as we look at it) points 'above' towards the 'star child' and his right hand points down to Earth 'below'.

Note the music 'Al Bowlly'....Midnight, the Stars & You...this is very suggestive of the 'star child' and his position in space (in the stars) and if we run with the idea that it's a New Year's Eve Ball (not July 4th) then this photo (Overlook 1921 Ball) would be taken at midnight.  "Midnight and a rendez-vous"...to 'meet at midnight' and to 'solve et coagula' (separate & bring together).   Watch in the 'synch video' how Jack & the 'star child' seem to be merging into one another....a rendezvous (see next pic).

Great Party isn't it?

This is not meant to entirely discount the July 4th Independence date...because that is still an important aspect connected to the US nation and I'm totally bought into the whole idea of the Native American massacre...so understand I'm not discounting it at all, this is the multi-faceted nature of Kubrick films!

Both Al Bowlly songs seem to be important...even the one Jack hears when he sees the ballon & ribbon covered Overlook lobby.....'It's All Forgotten Now'....which is probably an in-joke about Jack after having left Wendy after his chat "i'm not gonna let you fuck this up"....he's already forgotten what he's done etc.  It's a bit like EWS with 'Strangers In The Night' playing at the mansion to indicate to the others that there is a 'stranger' in town! :-)

The 'star child' and Jack beginning to merge...'as above, so below'.

The happy couple merged in their rendez-vous (We'll Meet Again, Strangelove) suggesting reincarnation...trapped soul cycle?

This 'overlaid synch' shows this merger perfectly Jack & star child, as one...right on cue for the 'rendez-vous', as Al sings it!

"midnight with the stars and you, midnight and a rendez-vous"  This one is heavy on rebirth.

"I know all my whole life through I'll be remembering you"

If you replace 'eyes' with 'hand/arms'...those lyrics would make pefect sense, as you can see Jack seems to be tendering a piece of paper (a message) to the heavens (above) or to us....yet a man behind him seems to be trying to restrain him from doing so or is he attempting to correct/level the scales!?

Now look at the woman in the photo....look at the single feather & the heart.  I think she is referencing the Feather of Maat.

A great judgement...isn't it?

The 20th card of the Tarot 'major arcana'. The 'horn of judgement'...that doubles as a prop to denote a New Years party and midnight.

Re: The synch...now if you have the music playing from 2001 : ASO (Thus Spake Zarathustar/the world riddle) and The Shining together...you'll hear the very loud 'brass' sound of horns when we see this picture and the man with the party blower...denoting the horn of judgement blowing! (i only used the sound from The Shining, this time...so as not to confuse things too much, but it is important to realise the aforementioned 'horn' music!

In the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, the hearts of the dead were said to be weighed against her single "Feather of Ma'at", symbolically representing the concept of Maat, in the Hall of Two Truths (Overlook lobby hall).  A heart which was unworthy was devoured by the goddess Ammit (Amemet/Cyncocephalus) and its owner condemned to remain in the Duat (earthly plane). The heart was considered the location of the soul by ancient Egyptians. Those people with good and pure hearts were sent on to Aaru (afterlife, ascendence).

Arms....Jack looks like a 'tipped' set of scales....unfortunately for him, it denotes that his heart is heavy with sin!  He is destined for the Duat or earthly plane, again!!!  Heart on the right and feather on our left, as it is in the Egyptian references.  Is the man with his hand on Jack's arm also a reference to him trying to rebalance the scales...a possiblity to consider?

So in the 1921 pic he is both 'baphomet' (sodomy god, the beast instinct, above & below, microcosm & macrocosm) and the 'scales'...double layering.

More double layering....or at least double!

Yes....the man in the costume has a 'baboon bottom'...this is creating an additional layer and one that relates to the earlier pics 'feather & heart' &  'judgement'.  You all know what a 'baboon's ass' looks like!!!

Hall of Ma'at. This hall is where the deceased was judged for his worthiness to enter the afterlife.

Anubis & Amemet/Cynocephalus - Derwent & Dog/Bear/Baboon.

Of course, this doesn't preclude the 'abuse' concept or Danny & the bear as a metaphor...it just adds to the layers.  I have flipped the Dog/Derwent image to compare to the anubis/amemet image, at the moment of 'judgment'....remember this scene is in the closing minutes of the film, very close to Jack's death....this seems to be a portence of what is to come re: Jack and his own 'judgment'.  Derwent is in Anubis' seated position and the Dog-bear is assuming the position of  Amemet/Cynocephalus (see the front legs, same position) who looks over his shoulder to Thoth (aka Hermes, not pictured) awaiting the fate of the judged heart, for he will swallow it, if judged negatively (remain in the duat/earthly realm).

(Just for the record....Thoth/Hermes can also appear as a dog faced baboon or a man with the head of a baboon when he is A'an, the god of equilibrium...so he is connected to the 'baboon' too.) The equilibrium being connected to the scales and balance etc...so that is easy to understand why, given the mythology and characters present.

Jack sent back to the Duat/Earthly realm.

The dog-headed ape (Simia hamadryas) which in Egyptian mythology was called Amemet (eater of the dead) whose master was Thoth or Tehuti or Hermes/Mercury. In the Judgment scene in The Egyptian Book of the Dead, Amemet is represented as seated by Thoth (Hermes/Mercury), ready to inform his master when the pointer marks the middle of the beam on the balance, when the heart is being weighed in the scales. After Thoth (Hermes/Mercury) makes his announcement to the gods concerning the result of the weighing of the heart, the company of the gods decree that Amemet shall not be permitted to prevail over the successful candidate.

The Shining  Paths of the Tarot

Jack (Jacob) 'the fool'

The Fool 0

The Fool is usually interpreted as the protagonist of a story, and the Major Arcana is the path the Fool takes through the great mysteries of life and the main human archetypes. This path is known traditionally in Tarot as the Fool's Journey. 
 
The opening shot of Jack in his car on the way to the Overlook (going to the sun road)...even the Tarot card itself has reference to the 'shining' sun across the 'snow peaked' mountain tops...just like the opening section of the film itself! The fool is on the edge of a precipice, about to enter his journey...as is Jack, his car is running along the edge of the mountain road, about to enter his journey.

Jack (the protaganist) trapped in the duat/earth realm and returned to the base of the sephiroth(tree of life) and/or Jack is the fool/joker on his wild-goose-chase cycle to inevitable death and rebirth.  (see 2001/Shining endings synch) We're back to square one...back to the starting point of the next cycle...The Fool is the alpha & omega, the beginning and the end!

The opening shot (the starting point) & 'Wild Goose Island' (Wild-Goose-Chase)...Jack driving on his own to the Overlook, this is his 'Fool's Journey'! "I intend to change my jacket before the duck & goose soiree".

The ending 'moebius loop'...it seems like gibberish, but on closer inspection (via subtitles)...

With Jack as baphomet/the devil...perhaps a veiled link to LaVey and his Church of Satan that came out of San Francisco.

The Tarot

The Magican I

 A youthful figure in the robe of a magician has the face of the divine Apollo, the sun god, with a confident smile and shining eyes.  The Magician guides The Fool through the first step out of the cave of childhood into the sunlight of consciousness, just as Hermes guides Persephone out of the Underworld every year.  He represents the potential of a new adventure, chosen or thrust upon one. A journey undertaken in daylight, in the Enlightenment tradition. He brings things out of the darkness into the light. He explores the world in order to master it. He is solar consciousness.   

No explanation really required....we can clearly see that this refers to Danny (very closely, in fact) and Stanley has him fitted out in homage to Apollo (The Sun God, not the goddam space mission).  Danny even throws darts in the games room...the arrow of apollo.

  

The High Priestess II

 She is seated between the white and black pillars—'J' and 'B' for Jachin & Boaz—of the mystic Temple of Solomon. The veil of the Temple is behind her: it is embroidered with palm leaves and pomegranates.  The motif that hangs behind the High Priestess’s throne, veiling what ever mysteries she guards, is suggested in the pattern of The Empress' gown.  The two are sisters, one bringing life into the world, the other inviting the living to the esoteric mysteries.

The Empress III

The Empress sits on a throne wearing a starry crown, holding a scepter in one hand. The Scepter is representative of her power over life, her crown has twelve stars representing her dominance over the year, and 'her throne is in the midst of a field of grain', representative of her dominion over growing things (Danny is her 'growing thing').  She is the Great Goddess, the consort of the dying god (Jack is a dying god, so too Hallorann) , she’s also associated with Key 21, The World, the final card of the Tarot. Through death, rebirth, and reproduction the world is renewed.  She often represents mothers, good and bad, or the demands of the real world. She can also portray the blood flowing throughout all living things, and the womb and the tomb. (hence her elavator 'river of blood' experience)   

This is the feminine aspect and I think Stanley left a real cryptic clue for this and that is GRAIN....or for our purposes RYE, as in Catcher In The Rye...being read by feminine Wendy.  Rye (grain cereal crop) grows in the field.  Her chair (throne) is in the midst of 'rye'.  

The Emperor IV

The Emperor symbolizes the desire to rule over one's surroundings, and its appearance in a reading often suggests that the subject needs to accept that some things may not be controllable, and others may not benefit from being controlled.  The Emperor is Key Four of the Major Arcana. Fours are stable numbers; four walls, four seasons, four corners. It takes a massive amount of energy, comparatively, to move them. 
  
This makes me think of Jack 'The Father figure' ominously 'overlooking' the maze (Fours corners, a square) at Danny & Wendy (in the high zoom shot) where we get a birdseye view and can audibly hear Danny & Wendy...this could be seen as a control/rule aspect via Jack's vision etc.

The Hierophant V

Hierophant literally means “the one who teaches the holy things”.  The Hierophant can also represent someone who stands out as a "pillar of the community", often a person who is respected by others and can be a source of moral authority & is socially respected.  He is an individual who can perceive things happening in situations on multiple levels.  In non-Western cultures (Native American, Siberian) the Hierophant retains the role as spiritual guide, wearing here the mask of a shamho is also the teacher of holy thins.  
This really sounds like a description of Hallorann...the Head Chef (Chef has it's root in Chief) and during the film he is an avatar for Native American's (Calumet cans) and that would bring in a heavy shamanistic aspect to him.

The Lovers VI

The Lovers is associated with the star sign Gemini, and indeed is also known as The Twins in some decks.  The Lovers is associated through its cross sum (the sum of the digits) with The Devil, card 15.  

The Grady twins look like 'ringers'  for the 'gemini twins' and they fit nicely with Danny's Apollo reference.  Also the assocition with the devil card....hence this reference I made earlier!

The Chariot VII

It means a union of opposites, like the black and white steeds.  The card can, in fact, indicate new motivation or inspiration, which gets a stagnant situation moving again. It can also imply, on a more pragmatic level, a trip (usually by car), a vehicle - in the repair shop if the card comes up reversed - or a message.   

This would fit with Danny in his 'chariot' (cycle) that he rides around the Overlook in and could also refer to the trashed Overlook's snowcat vehicle that Jack damages.  Black & white sphinxes....Hallorann (Black snowcat/sphinx) travelling in his own 'chariot' to answer the psychic call of Danny (White cylce/sphinx)..  Are the 2 snowcats also a glacial form of the sphinx, afterall the events are taking place inside a 'pyramid'?  Sphinx literally means to 'strangle' and that is where the word 'asphyxiation' is derived 'to grip or strangle' or in this case to strangle/choke Danny.

The Strength VIII

The card stresses discipline and control. The lion represents the primal or id-like part of the mind, and the woman, the 'higher' or more elevated parts of the mind. The card tells the Querent to be wary of base emotions and impulse.  Strength in this case, the battle is mainly internal rather than external.  In the Crowley deck this card is entitled Lust, and receives a different focus, as a sun sign , namely Leo, implying a potency that is sexual, creative, and intuitive, which are all attributes of the element Fire.   

I've got two aspects for this one...Jack seen losing control after the confrontaion with Wendy and if we take the lust interpretation then that would key in the 'woman' from 237 who he lusts after.  In both cases Jack shows a lack of control for anger & lust!

The Hermit IX

The Hermit may be the old man or woman, metaphorically, that we meet who gives us the insights or tools or training we need to confront the beasts of the forest (Jack 'the beast' in the maze of hedges!), the sealed cave, the gated castle, the wormhole.  While The Hermit mostly integrates the lessons of the sunlit world, the Moon stands at the threshold of light and dark and churns the waters of life. In both cases, treasures can be uncovered through contemplation of what is brought forth. In both cases, monsters may be found (Jack?).  The 'cowl' (see pic) The Hermit wears protects him and isolates him. Hopefully, at some point, he casts it off and rejoins the world.   

Hallorann fits the description of the 'hermit'. He gives Danny insight through their isolated chat in the kitchen and he stands alone as an individual character with no ties, he also gives Danny the tools to confront Jack after his own sacrifice leads to Danny drawing Jack into the maze, he was able to confront the beast of the forest. 'Mostly integrates the lessons of the sunlit world'...there is a heat wave in Florida where he lives, opposite to the conditions at the Overlook...he wears a 'cowl' like jacket whilst on his trip to the ovewrlook (see pic), he rejoins the world.  Hallorann is so perceptive that when Danny mentions 237 (in a precognitive sense, a premonition) he immediately knows that something bad WILL happen there (using his own precognitive sense), if Danny goes in, hence 'STAY OUT etc'.  There is always The Summer of '42 to consider....Hermie the main protaganist!

Wheel of Fortune X

 The Wheel of Fortune represents the intercession of random chance into the Fool's path. The card represents the forces that can help or hinder the querant suddenly or unpredictably. It is closely connected to The Magician and The Sun . 

The 'spoked wheeled' at The Overlook

Wheel of Fortune (Card 10/X) corresponds to the letter Kaph, meaning 'palm of the hand'

The Shining Wheel.  Danny's hand (kaph) taking dart from the #10 segment of a dartboard!

Winged Danny (Flyers jacket), red darts, Cupid's arrow (see wheel and note the gemini 'twins', who show up here). Colorado (Colored Red, see red anubis wrapped around the wheel).  Flag with the red wrapped 'SUN' in view.  The 4 cardinal (meaning RED) points, 4 elements, evangelists, fixed signs etc, are shown on the card. Taurus, the dartboard has the 'Red Bull's Eye', Jack is the Minotaur maze Bull(y). Gemini (aka Lovers) Twins, 'Come play with us Danny, for ever and ever'...cyclical, like the wheel.  Red-rum Danny's transport, is a tri-cycle.

 Distance - The oche should be 7 ft 9¼in (2.37 m) from the face of the board...237 (Room No.)

10, 21 & 42

The numbers on a dartboard run from 1 to 20 with no duplicates. Think of pairing them up like this: 1 and 20, 2 and 19, 3 and 18... and so on to 10 and 11. Each pair adds up to 21. 

10 pairs in total. So the total of all the numbers on a dartboard is 210.

The 'Big Wheel' Scene...geddit?

 A 'Big Wheel' tricycle, he cycles around the hotel in a cyclical type way...the scene is actually referred to as the 'Big Wheel Scene'. Large wheel-like ceiling lights also occupy the lower floor.

His 'wheel' journey isn't physically possible, not from the way it is shown. It was deliberately segued together to create a longer continuous scene, perhaps to emphasize the looping cycle.

 The shot was executed by Garret Brown, using a steadicam mounted on a wheel-chair.

The Wheel...2001 & Doctor Strangelove...X (10, like the card) Men First Class

Kubrick is always referencing the wheel.

Justice XI

This card is closely related to the XX card 'Judgement' (a portion of that card is also shown in the strip pic above) and the 'Maat' aspect, but this is more to do with 'open justice' and may signify that injustice needs righting and that balance (see scales in this card) is missing and the sword (see card) may represent accountability.  

The imbalance is that Jack cannot or will not admit his abuse of Danny and for which he is also accountable, maybe even he 'himself' is in denial (as is common with victims/perpetrators of abuse) and won't see (after maybe having been abused himself as a boy, a forever & ever  abuse cycle?).  Jack goes into 237 and meets with a 'manifestation' that represents his abuse of Danny, room 237 is where the choking of Danny occurred.  At first Jack is OK with this sexual liaison, but the reflected mirror view of him embracing the young woman, finally revealing the rotten & decaying old woman, an avatar for this abuse of his, so now he now must accept it on a personal level.  This is probably why he sees that the only solution to his dilema, is to destroy Danny & Wendy and therefore avoid his responsibility as a child sex abuser and save himself.  Both the young woman and the old woman coming out of the tub, the latter mockingly chasing him down, are direct references to the judgement card (as in pic) and the people in the vessels in water (which look like tubs, see pic) and during which, the horn of judgement blows, perhaps the old woman's awful laugh is a reference to the horn.  This is a precursor to Jack's final judgement card 20 where his soul will be weighed against the ma'at feather and be found wanting!

The Hanged Man XII

 Hallorann in the 'Hanged Man' spot, the card is linked to sacrifice (sometimes martyrdom) through the Jesus & Osiris stories...the destruction of self brings life to humanity. 
It is Hallorann that makes the sacrifice to save Danny by going there and he brings the snowcat that they escape in. Hallorann is killed/sacrificed by Jack on what looks like a 'cross' a templar like cross. (the card features the tau cross).

Death XIII

The Death card commonly depicts a skeleton riding a horse. Surrounding it are dead and dying people from all classes, including kings, bishops and commoners. The skeleton carries a black standard emblazoned with a white flower. Some decks depict the Crashing Towers from the Moon with the Sun rising behind them in the background.   

Jack's death in the maze...The Death card shows a white horse carry 'Death' and the scene is seemingly suggestive of 'white death'.

Temperance XIV

In most modern tarot decks, Temperance stands between Death and The Devil. He or she (traditions vary) guides the souls of the dead to judgment. If the soul is heavier than a feather, it will be fed to the eater of souls.(Amemet/Cynocephalus/Dog-Bear) 

Wendy sees this near the end of the film, it fits with the themes herein...Jack will soon die in the maze, and his soul will travel through the lobby hallway, like it's being guided. She is the woman in the photo 'heart &  feather' Maat.  The strange 'Derwent moment' discovered by Wendy also fits in with this...impending judgement (the look to thoth for the verdict by amemet/cynocephalus) and this seems to be a 'pre-cognition' moment for her in respect of what is to come for Jack...at this point even Wendy IS 'shining'.

The Devil XV

The Tarot Devil card is derived in part from Levi's famous illustration "Baphomet" in his Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (1855). Baphomet is winged and horned, combining human and bestial features.   

Outside of the baphomet reference we're already seen, Jack's been playing the 'devil' in the lead up to the closing part of the film...hunting down Danny and Wendy with an axe.

Immediately following T'he Devil'/Jack we have...

XVI The Tower

 After the self bondage of The Devil, life is self correcting. Either the querents must make changes in their own lives, or the changes will be made for them. The querent may be holding on to false ideas or pretenses; a new approach to thinking about the problem is needed. The querent is advised to think outside the box. The querent is warned that truth may not oblige schema. It may be time for the querent to re-examine belief structures, ideologies, and paradigms they hold to. 

 Chaos ----- Sudden change ----- Impact ----- Hard times---- Crisis ----- Revelation ----- Realizing the truth.

Wendy was in bondage to Jack (the devil) and all her ideas of him must be completely blown after he has just tried to axe them both to death.  She is now having to realise the truth and acts accordingly, Danny escapes through the window, but Wendy can't, however, the approaching Snowcat stops the attack.   

The Star XVII

In the Fool's or Hero's Journey (Jack), the Star indicates that we are approaching the goal of enlightenment.

 Jack has failed in his mission to kill Wendy & Danny and he has frozen to death in the maze, this after being outwitted by Danny.  Audibly sung by Al...'Midnight, with the stars and you'...as we approach doorway & photo after going through.  Jack's enlightenment is nigh and the 'star' vocal is his (and our) indication, that the judgement of his existence has arrived and is to be weighed by ma'at.

The Moon XVIII

According to Waite's The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, the card represents life of the imagination apart from life of the spirit.   

Seen after doorway, immdiately after the Sun, the moon from 2001:ASO synched/overlaid...Jack's spirit is in transition and this (moon) and the next card can be thought of as a representation of the alchemical marriage of the sun & the moon, they're seen almost together.

The Sun XIX

An infant (Danny like) rides a white horse under the anthropomorphized sun (the gold room sign is an anthropomorphized sun too, with people on it!), with sunflowers in the background. The child of life holds a red flag (the lobby curtains look similar to this flag imo), representing the blood of renewal while a smiling sun shines down on him, representing accomplishment. The conscious mind prevails over the fears and illusions of the unconscious.  Innocence (Danny) is renewed through discovery, bringing hope for the future (they both survive and have hope).  


Jack's imminent renewal via rebirth. Seen just before doorway 'Gold Room' sign. If we really wanted to keep the correct order, we could even take the July 4th date as a reference to the height of summer, when the sun is at its maximum. 

Judgement XX

It is usually interpreted as a signal of an impending judgment, such as of postponed decisions. As the card symbolizes resurrection, it can also be interpreted to herald the return of individuals from the past. The card also represents the Christian God's promise of life after death.    

Jack's judgement and resurrection/rebirth (individual's from the past, see the photo!), the horn of judgement & the man blowing the party horn in the photo & the goddess maat, the woman with the feather & heart.  Towards th latter stages of the film, Jack is seen gripping at his heart area, all the way through the maze scene until he dies!!!

If you had the music from 2001:ASO playing over the synch of both the films endings, then you will certainly here the horn here too!

The World XXI

The World represents an ending to a cycle of life, a pause in life before the next big cycle beginning with the fool.  The figure is at once male and female (Jack as baphomet, an androgynous male/female entity), above and below, suspended (like Jack here) between the heavens (Jack points as above, starchild) and the earth (Jack points so below, planet earth).  Exactly like the synch overlay shows...EXACTLY!

Note the 'ouroboros' (a cycle, like a snake eating it's own tail) design of the card (above) and now note the 'ouroboros' image behind the 'monarch' twins (below)...just outside the games room. 

"Come play with us for ever and ever"...or a perpetual cycle (forever & ever)...like the ouroboros!

The ouroboros evokes the serpent wrappred around the egg too!

The Fool 0

- back to the egg 0.

   Jack/Jacob trapped in the duat/earth realm (bottom of the tree, malkuth or bottom of jacob's ladder) and returned to the base of the sephiroth(tree of life) and/or Jack is the fool/joker on his wild-goose-chase cycle to inevitable death.  We're back to square one...back to the starting point of the next cycle...The Fool is the alpha & omega, the beginning and the end!

...now remember the opening shot (the starting point) & 'Wild Goose Island' (Wild-Goose-Chase)...Jack driving on his own to the Overlook, this is his 'Fool's Journey'! "I intend to change my jacket before the duck & goose soiree".

The opening seconds...ha, ha...see what I did there, I turned it into a loop, the film is an ouroboros loop or a mobius strip.

Jack as 'the joker' in Batman.

The same 'judgement' concept utilised in both The Shining & Eyes Wide Shut?

Thoth (Hermes/Mercury) is echoed in Eyes Wide Shut when Mandy yells from the balcony (as redeemer) and then she is judged and death is the result. (see below)  Note...I've seen other researchers claim that the costumed man next to Mandy is a 'plague Doctor', admittedly they look similar, but none of that ties into the judgement aspects that I'm raising (they are plain to see) and in this case, I'll say they're wrong about the 'plague Doctor' aspect.  Kubrick is clearly trying to evoke Thoth/Hermes/Mercury.

That sequence with Red Cloak & Harford reads like a 'judgement' scene too...Harford gets judged and we're to assume that his 'death' will be the result, except that Mandy acts as his redeemer and then she is the one who is 'judged' and the result is HER death...she is lead away by Thoth, perhaps to be devoured by the cynocephali (masked mansion guests) below her.  The mansion congregation look over their shoulders to Mandy & Thoth in what almost seems like an echo of the Amemet/Cynocephalus moment from The Shining (dog bear/derwent) and the Hall of Judgement/Maat aspect, but I admit this is going out on a limb.  Mandy even wears the Ostrich (the maat feather originates from the ostrich) feather head piece in this scene.

And to book end the entire film....the opening sequence of The Shining has 'Dies Irae' (Day of Wrath)...The poem describes the day of judgment, the last trumpet summoning souls before the throne of God, where the saved will be delivered and the unsaved cast into eternal flames.

This again is echoed in EWS when Bill calls in at the coffee shop and reads about Mandy's death...Mozart's Requiem (Rex tremendae) is playing in the background.  (Mozart...Sequentia III contains Dies Irae & Rex tremendae.) There seem to be  a lot of crossover elements going on with The Shining & Eyes Wide Shut.

More precognition of judgement before the ineviatable end scene, from the women of 237 bathroom.

Tarot card...note how they're naked, surrounded by water, just like in a bath tub...why those vessels they are standing in, look like bath tubs!

Look how closely matched this image is...it's uncanny!

The 237 woman (as Rob Ager has already stated) are also an avatar for Jack's sexual abuse on Danny.

I left out this aspect on The Joker - Fool pic earlier, has to be included for obvious reasons...Jack is the Fool on his journey.

Obviously Modine's character in Full Metal Jacket....goes through his own 'journey' (quite a harrowing one!) and hence is cast as the 'fool/joker' and ultimately

he becomes 'the judge' when he kills the 'sniper' (who kind of resembles Wendy) after Rafterman has initially shot her!

The Overlook as a 'glacial' representation of the Giza Plateau.

The 'snow trac' (as it is technically called) but referred to as the the 'the snow cat' throughout the film...in profile looks just like a version of the sphinx (cat-like) and is up against the Overlook background of 'glacial' pyramids.

 

Pre-cognition of sexual abuse...

I noticed something, there is a poster that clearly shows the word 'CHOKING' as a header (clearly visible on Blu Ray), a safety notice probably & this is situated next to the 'sex pics' (probably left by the workmen in the basement, during the hotel season).  So that is 'choking' and 'sex' referenced right at the moment Jack flips-out upstairs and this comes just after Danny goes to 237 (where the abuse obviously occurs!).  Danny is choked and sexually abused....there is a 2nd 'choking' pic as Wendy turns the corner and just before it.....X marks the spot!

Suggestive of a relationship between Jack & Danny (Daniel)...drinking Bourbon in the Lloyd bar scene.

I'd do anything thing for him....any 'fucking thing'.  I leave you to work out the sexual allusion there! 

How prescient this magazine is....Playgirl, the copy that Jack is seen reading in the lobby of the Overlook before his interview.

The maze chase....

Think of the sexual allusions of this statement..."I'm coming" (point of ejaculation) & "I'm right behind you" (position of Jack's body relative to Danny's during the sex act).

The old woman and Jack embrace...as do Wendy and Danny similarly.  The old woman is an avatar (in one aspect, judgement is another) for Danny's abuse by Jack.  In Jack's scene it's probably a suggestion that he at that moment realises his abuse (albeit temporarily...."It's All Forgotten Now") and in Wendy's she is finally fully cognisant (probably been repressed) of the fact that Jack is an 'abuser' of Danny and now herself.

Room 237

Phallic '237' carpet...indicative of Danny's abuse by Jack, no doubt the scene where  the attack/abuse occurred.  Note also the 'rainbow' motif that arcs over the top...further resonance of 'rainbows' (Danny's room in Denver/sirius/rainbow bridge/antahkarana) etc.

Antahkarana/rainbow bridge (see Manhattan Working for more on this)....sanskrit meaning "that which acts or works between"

The rainbow bridge is sometimes thought of as a DNA ladder -Jacob's Ladder (The Awakening Of Jacob, The Shining soundtrack!)

The journey over the rainbow bridge is the journey into higher awareness. It is the journey home, to OZ - everything is spiraling back to Zero Point 'O' - Zero - completion of the cycle of time.

Somewhere over the rainbow...is the pot of gold (of human consciousness).

Anyway...Hermie plays a young teen who has a love affair with an older woman...cough, cough!

The love interest is Dorothy (theres no place like home) and a key friend is Oscy or Oz-cy, for a nice Dorothy/OZ pay-off!  In fact during the film near the end, Dorothy leaves the island and Hermie is left a note, she says that she must go back home!

After the film ends, the cast is given by showing a still photo of each of the primary cast members with a superimposed name.  Very clever Stanley....which evokes the ending of The Shining, as if i needed to tell you!

Khepri (also spelled Khepera, Kheper, Chepri, Khepra) is a god in ancient Egyptian religion. Khepri was connected with the scarab beetle (kheprer), because the scarab rolls balls of dung across the ground, an act that the Egyptians saw as a symbol of the forces that move the sun across the sky. Khepri was thus a solar deity and he was specifically connected with the rising sun.

How many 'Sun' references can Stanley 'shoe-horn' into the mix?

"The Going To The Sun Road"....This road is shown in the opening credits of the 1980 film The Shining, as Jack Torrance's Volkswagen glides past Saint Mary Lake and up the road, underneath a small tunnel and onward, presumably going to the Overlook Hotel for his job interview as a caretaker.  Ok...how about Jack NicholSUN, for a phonetic touch, in the above pic...yes I slightly doctored it to make the point?

Note...it almost looks like the photo poster of the skier has been 'augmented' to some degree to mirror the 'haunches' of the minotaur...even got a tail-like protrusion!  The poster below the 'exit sign' looks like the head and horns (centre) of a bull/cow.

The Shining...The Hall of Two Judgements & The Afterlife.

ADZE - AHNETJER

The adze is shown in ancient Egypt from the Old Kingdom onward. Originally the adze blades were made of stone, but already in the Predynastic Period copper adzes had all but replaced those made of flint. While stone blades were fastened to the wooden handle by tying, metal blades had sockets into which the handle was fitted. Examples of Egyptian adzes can be found in museums and on the Petrie Museum website. A depiction of an adze was also used as a hieroglyph, representing the consonants stp, "chosen", and used as: ...Pharaoh XX, chosen of God/Goddess YY...

 The Hall of Two Judgements...Lobby Hallway 'End to End'...Ahnetjer one end, 'monolith judgement doorway' other end.

The ahnetjer depicted as an adze-like instrument, was used in the Opening of the Mouth ceremony, intended to convey power over their senses to statues and mummies. It was apparently the foreleg of a freshly sacrificed bull or cow (minotaur/maze) with which the mouth was touched.

Jack's Azde/Ahnetjer...Wendy's Open Mouth

 In the Egyptian mythology there is the journey to the underworld where the rod/device (adze/ahnetjer) to “open the way/mouth” is used to open the mouth of the ‘black serpent’ (blackhole/wormhole).

 THE OPENING OF THE MOUTH CEREMONY - EGYPT  (Azde/Ahnetjer, left black rod in front of pharoah)

The opening of the mouth ceremony (or ritual) was an ancient Egyptian ritual described in funerary texts such as the Pyramid Texts.

Funerary magic

The ritual involved the symbolic animation of a statue or mummy by magically opening its mouth so that it could breathe and speak. There is evidence of this ritual from the Old Kingdom to the Roman Period. Special tools were used to perform the ceremony, such as a ritual adze, an arm shaped ritual censer, a spooned blade known as a peseshkaf, a serpent-head blade, and a variety of other amulets. A calf's leg was also held up to the lips painted on the coffin.
The ancient Egyptians believed that in order for a person's soul to survive in the afterlife it would need to have food and water. The opening of the mouth ritual was thus performed so that the person who died could eat and drink again in the afterlife.

The Shining hotel set was partially based on the Ahwahnee Hotel...Ahwahnee in Miwok Indian means 'Gaping Mouth'

 Danny's Opening of the Mouth...The Lift/Elevator is a version of 'the mouth' the dials above are the eyes (the word mouth originates from the Egyptian word Ma'at, as does the word Mother, which is where Matriarch comes from, Wendy is the 'matriarch' and she sees a similar vision to Danny.)

The 'Ahnetjer Hallway'...Jack rises (after hearing Danny scream) so his head/mouth overlay the 'ahnetjer' in the Hallway of  Two Judgements...just as would be for a mummy entering the afterlife, to animate symbolically!

When Wendy passes by the 'ahnetjer' only a few minutes later, it is GONE!
Even though she herself, has an 'open mouth' moment...she isn't being prepared for death (and mummification) , like Jack is and will be.

The Spell

My mouth is opened by Ptah,

My mouth's bonds are loosed by my city-god.

Thoth has come fully equipped with spells,

He looses the bonds of Seth from my mouth.

Atum has given me my hands,

They are placed as guardians.

My mouth is given to me,

My mouth is opened by Ptah,

With that chisel of metal

With which he opened the mouth of the gods.

I am Sekhmet-Wadjet who dwells in the west of heaven,

I am Sahyt among the souls of On.

In order to live for all eternity and be presented in front of Osiris, the body of the deceased had to be preserved by mummification, so that the soul could reunite with it, and take pleasure in the Afterlife. The main process of mummification was dehydrating the body using natron, a natural material found in Wadi Natrun which is a combination of baking soda and salt, to preserve the body. The body is drained of any liquids and left with skin, hair and muscles preserved.  The 70 days (process of mummification) are connected to Osiris and the length the star Sirius/Sothis/Sopdet was absent from the sky.

Hunefer is conducted to the balance by jackal-headed Anubis. The monster Ammut crouches beneath the balance so as to swallow the heart should a life of wickedness be indicated.  Anubis conducts the weighing on the scale of Maat, against the feather of truth. The ibis-headed Thoth, scribe of the gods, records the result. If his heart is lighter than the feather, Hunefer is allowed to pass into the afterlife. If not, he is eaten by the waiting chimeric devouring creature Ammit, which is composed of the deadly crocodile, lion, and hippopotamus. In the next panel, showing the scene after the weighing, a triumphant Hunefer, having passed the test, is presented by falcon-headed Horus to the shrine of the green-skinned Osiris, god of the underworld and the dead, accompanied by Isis and Nephthys. The 14 gods of Egypt are shown seated above, in the order of judges.

In the underworld the deceased’s spirit must compete with gods, evil creatures and gatekeepers to reach Osiris and the Hall of Final Judgment. After the dangerous journey through the underworld, the god of the dead, Anubis, would lead the dead to the Hall of Two Truths, where the deceased stand in front of 42 judges and Osiris. The Book of the Dead helped the deceased say the right words to the judges. The deceased is led to a set of scales where their heart was weighed against the feather of truth, which symbolizes Maat the goddess of justice. The fate of the deceased would be decided - either entrance into the perfect afterlife or their heart would be eaten by Ammit, the devourer of the dead. If the deceased passed the test the judges in the Hall of the Two Truths pronounced the following divine order. The final judgment is a meeting with Osiris. Osiris, lord of the underworld, sits on his throne, represented as a mummy. On his head is the white crown of Lower Egypt (the north). He holds the symbols of Egyptian kingship in his hands: the shepherd's crook to symbolize his role as shepherd of mankind, and the flail, representing his ability to separate the wheat from the chaff. Behind him stand his wife Isis and her sister Nephthys. Isis is the one Together. Osiris, Isis and Nephthys welcome the deceased to the underworld. The afterlife was similar to the ordinary life, but more pleasant and enjoyable. The deceased would become a god and be accompanied by other gods. There was no evil and shabtis do any necessary labor. Poor people are wealthier and the old are young again.
